I currently dr ive a 2005 GMC Sierra, 2wd street truck.  It’s a practical vehicle.  My wife has given me the blessing to sell and start a project with my son, who is currently 13, so that we can work on it together until he’s 16.  Then it will be his...  I don’t like buying other people’s projects, but this thing is 80% where I want it and ready to drive.  The only con is a lack of a/c, which might be rough in Phoenix, lol...

I mean it’s a pretty simple vehicle and

1.) No AC builds character

2.) Or this exists: https://www.jegs.com/i/VPA/960/944170/10002/-1?CAWELAID=230006180037513053&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=44693592161&CATCI=pla-224362047431&catargetid=230006180039220355&cadevice=c&jegspromo=nonbrand&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpvzZBRCbARIsACe8vyJO9WuYZxRngc0vutlP7eF7zOu_O4acOqLLqdsnsbQwzAwNmkrBaXMaAvfwEALw_wcB

Also asking Oppo to talk you out of a car is like asking a drug dealer to recommend a rehab center

Friends don’t let friends get murdered Craigslisting in Goodyear.

I DD’d my ‘66 GMC for a year in Phoenix without AC. It’s doable, you just have to carry a spare shirt and pair of pants around as whatever you’re wearing  will get soaked through with sweat.

Ok, so hear me out. I think this would maybe be a not great idea. Not the worst mind you, but not great. An offload beast becomes expensive to maintain, maybe easy to wrench on because anything on 35's has some clearance, but anything on 35's also sucks gas and chews up parts. I think you’d be better off aiming for old truck “looks cool n goes fast” vs old truck “off-road beast” . Plus a normal bed in the back of a truck will be of more practical use to a young man starting out his life for general tasks l ike moving and renos and camping. An offload machine would be cool, but do a project that sets him up for years to come once he can drive it. And that maybe won’t require him to have a second “practical” vehicle right out the gate.

Sidenote: S orry to be “that guy”. I love off-road animals!

I get it, and mostly agree, but I’m not here to talk people out of buying awesome vehicles lol . That’s pretty much what I would build if I did an off road project. The fuel economy and the lack of A/C would suck though.

Phoenix? Go old school and find a window-mounted swamp cooling unit if he needs cool air.

I think it’s awesome. Just the wrong kind of awesome. I think a 60-70’s truck with a fuel injected engine that roasts tires would also be awesome, but also more in line with gifting to his kid afterwards.

I told him, you can have a boring-ass car or little truck, or even my current ride if you want all those creature comforts, or you can sweat thre months out of the year and be the only kid at your school (a parking lot full of Beemers, Lexuses (Lexi?) and expensive rides) with a straight-up monster truck.  Camping with your friends will be legendary!  I sure as hell don’t mind daily driving something like this, even when it’s 115 degrees out.  Sometimes being a badass means giving up the a/c, lol!

I’d be more interested in the C10 in the background of the photo....

I’ll be ditching the 8-inch springs for a four-inch lift, trimming the fenders to fit tires, likely an LS swap or at a minimum swapping in a pre-Vortec TBI motor.  Add some rock sliders, port the power-steering pump for hydraulic-assist steering, maybe an ARB up front...

Me too, but not for a 16 year old to drive around in, that would be my project AFTER we build a K5...

I was thinking the same thing. An off-roader seems highly impractical for a new driver, especially one that just begs to be driven all over every lawn in the neighborhood.... not that I’ve done something like that as a teen, but I’ve heard of such things happening...

‘Parks van on the street by the park still dripping with mud.... police cruiser pulls up, excuse me, who’s vehicle is this? We’re you driving through the park?

No Maim, not me...

oh, okay then, because that would be a pretty hefty ticket if it were. And by the way, you should clean you van.

Thank you very much officer, will do...’

I mean, I’ve heard of such things happening ;)

8-inch springs are hardly necessary and can make driving pretty tricky. Especially if it’s going to be his first driver. I like your plan.

I see what you mean, but we plan on spending a lot of time in the mountains, lol. And when he leaves for college, I’ll take the Blazer and match whatever he’s got saved up to buy him a “practical” ride. Fuel consumption and comfort aren’ t huge concerns because he’ll really only drive it to school and work most of the time, and straight to the mountains for camping, hunting and general manly shenanigans in the summer...

That sounds like more fun. I like the idea of a project too. I’ve got three boys, oldest is 5, so I have a few years to pick our projects. I like the idea of the kid having some skin in the game, literally... I figure if they put in the blood and sweat to make it theirs, they will appreciate it more and be more likely to care for it.

I need a bigger garage....

My last K5 build I was running 38.5 Swampers on a four-inch lift, lots of sawzall work but it worked out great, low center of gravity and all that. I’m thinking we’ll run 37's on this one, something a little more drive able. Ain’t no balancing those Swampers, I trailered the thing to the trails.  Max speed before vibrations shook the dash apart was about 50mph, lol.  We’ll likely go with 37x12.50 BFG at KO’s...

He already thinks I’m a racecar driver, lol. My current truck isn’t too special, 5.3 LS with an intake, exhaust and a tune, but it’ll roast the tires like a champ and every time it rains I’m drifting EVERY turn... The kiddo brags to all of his friends that his dad is the best driver out there, that he can drift anything, hahahahahahaha! I used to drift my F350 work truck when it was rainy, same with my old Isuzu box truck in the snow back in Colorado. You grow up with snow in your life, you’d better be able to drift and slide corners or your father has failed you... Started in a 77 Cutlass, spent my firs t ten winters with high powered, RWD vehicles in Colorado, so when people claim they need 4wd or AWD in the snow, I giggle a little.  Good tires and a functional brain get you dang near anywhere!

If it’s for getting outdoors and whatnot I’m all for it. And if it’s a trade-out situation for when he’s heading out on his own I think that works out pretty well. I had a trike for that when I was a kid, but I could also just drive out my backyard, down the alley and hit the wilderness in about 45 seconds. So yeah, if it’s for camping and wheeling and booting around in until he heads out... g et at it. Wish I had a hilariously fun set of wheels as a teen. I learned to drive in a 1987 Toyota 4Runner in 4-lo... learned a lot about vehicles.
